4 Weigela Propagation Methods

Written by Maggie

Weigela can be propagated by seed, cutting, layering and division, of which sowing propagation is the most common. Seeds should be collected in September, and then they can be seeded into culture soil after accelerated germination treatment, covered with a thin layer of soil, and preserved in the dark. The following are four Weigela propagation methods.

1. Weigela Propagation by Seed

Sowing seeds is one of Weigela propagation methods. Harvest the fruits in September to October every year, dry the fruits, rub them into pieces, remove the sundries and get the seeds. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in cold water for 2-3 hours and wrapped in wet cloth.

Choose no wind weather, and we can use the bed surface broadcast or drill. After sowing the soil can not be too thick, keep the bed surface wet within 30 days. About 20 days later, it can emerge as seedlings.

Weigela seedlings should be regularly pulled out during the growth of insects. Weigela has a long growth period and is generally used for mass reproduction.

2. Weigela Propagation by Cutting

The mutant type of Weigela should be raised by cutting methods, and the seed propagation is difficult to maintain the mutant character. The practice in Heilongjiang Province is to cut 1-2 years of unsprouted branches in early April, cut and grow 10-12cm cuttings, dip the cuttings in 2000mg/kg solution of α-naphthoxyacetic acid and insert them into the sand setting bed with plastic film shading on the open ground, and the bottom of the sand bed is best padded with a layer of rotten horse dung to increase the ground temperature. The ground temperature is required to be 25-28℃, the air temperature is required to be 20-25℃, the air humidity in the shed is required to be 80%-90%, and the transmittance is required to be about 30%. 50-60 days later, it can take root, and the survival rate is about 80%.

Weigela can be cut in the summer of the year's half of the growth of lignified branches for cuttings, skewered into the soil in half, and then pouring water, often keeping the soil moist. The plum rain season can use the tender cuttings, the survival rate is also high. Spring in March or plum season can be hard cuttings or tender cuttings, cuttings cut into 15 cm long, cuttings after disinfection and shade in the bed; Or deciduous after taking 1 - year - old cuttings on the ground, which are easy to survive.

3. Weigela Propagation by Layering

Layering can also be used for Weigela propagation. They are pressed into the soil during the growing season and laid down to multiply. Usually in the flower after the selection of lower branches pressure, lower branches are easy to creep, nodes are easy to root and survive. Layering is carried out in early spring, autumn and winter. More in the spring before and after the combination of transplanting, the whole plant is dug out, divided into several clusters, and it can be planted separately. It is carried out in the middle of April. After sowing, the method of dyeing irrigation is applied. It is not allowed to spray water to the soil surface with a watering can so as not to flush the seeds out of the surface. Seedlings emerge about 15 days after sowing. But the use of sowing method for a longer growth period, generally a small amount of propagation does not use this method.

Layering can be carried out throughout the year, usually after the flowers selected under the lower branches are pressed. The lower branches of Weigela tend to be prostrate. In the growing season, they are pressed into the soil for laminating propagation, and the nodes are easy to root and survive.

4. Weigela Propagation by Division

Division propagation method of Weigela is carried out in early spring, autumn and winter. More in the spring before and after the combination of transplanting, the whole plant is dug out, divided into several clusters, and can be planted separately. In spring, mature annual branches are used to cut in the open field in February to March, or semi-lignified shoots are used in June to July and cut in shade shade. It can be laid in June. Seedling transplanting in spring and autumn all need to take soil, and  in summer it needs to take soil balls. After planting, apply decomposed compost once a year in early spring, and trim the senile branches.
