How to propagate Acorus calamus
If you're looking for a low-growing plant to add lots of texture to your garden, yard, landscape, or container gardens. It looks like a short grass -- and many folks consider it an ornamental grass -- but it's actually in a different plant family. No matter what it's related to, Acorus calamus is perfect for growing along walkways, in the front of the border as an edging plant, and as a fun addition to container gardens, window boxes, and even hanging baskets. Because Acorus calamus doesn't mind wet feet, it's also a fun addition to ponds and other water gardens where it adds a soft, natural look. Hardy in zones 6-9. Here are two propagation methods of Acorus calamus.
Seed propagation of Acorus calamus
The sees were cleaned and sown indoors, with moist soil or shallow water. Under the condition of about 20℃, they would sprout in early spring, and then be separated and cultivated. When the seedlings grew strong, they could be transplanted.
Division propagation of Acorus calamus
In early spring (before and after Tomb-sweeping Day) or during the growth period, dig underground stem with shovel, wash clean, remove old roots, stem and dead leaves, stem, and then cut underground stem into several blocks with sharp knife, keep 3~4 new buds each for reproduction. Plant Acorus calamus during the growing season, dig the plants up by their roots, and wash them.
Remove 2/3 of the roots and divide them into blocks. Keep the young acorus calamus leaves and buds as well as new roots when dividing Acorus calamus. For open-field cultivation, low-lying land beside the pool should be selected to plant plants with row spacing of small blocks of 20m and large blocks of 50m. However, according to the needs of waterscape arrangement, belt shape, rectangle shape, geometric shape and other planting methods can be adopted.
The depth of planting was to keep the main bud close to the mud surface, and irrigation was conducted at 1~3cm. For potted Acorus calamus, choose a watertight basin with an inner stem of 40~50cm, apply sufficient basal fertilizer on the bottom of the basin, dig holes in the middle to implant the rhizome, expose the soil surface at the growing point, and add water of 1~3cm. Acorus calamus has strong adaptability in the growing season and can be extensively managed.
Maintain water level or moisture in Acorus calamus growth period, apply topdressing 2~3 times, and combine fertilization and weeding. Nitrogen fertilizer was the main fertilizer in the early stage, phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer was the main fertilizer before heading and flowering. Every time you apply fertilizer, you must put the fertilizer into the mud (the surface of the mud is below 5cm). Before going through the winter, to clean up part of the ground branches, debris, centralized burning or composting. Open field cultivation 2~3 years to renew, pot 2 years to replace the plant once.
